Annual Memorial Service
Sunday September 18, 2016 At The Cemetery
The annual memorial service was originally inaugurated on Children's Sunday, the second Sunday in June 1876. The Reverend Mr. Shepherd
of the village Universalist Church was inspired to establish this service after observing this custom at Easter time while traveling in France.
The annual service was continued until June 1965, when the Directors decided to discontinue the tradition. In 1978,the Directors decided to resume the service which now takes place in the fall and the of each year. Those who attend the simple outdoor ceremony under the big old maple tree, consider this to be a memorable occasion.
The Service is simple, with one or two clergy representing different faiths in the Stamford area community. Hymns are sung by those in attendance and the service includes a complete and comprehensive musical program and commentary.
This year the Annual Memorial Service will be held at the cemetery (weather permitting) on Erskine Road, Sunday September 18, 2016 at 2:30PM. We look forward to having you join us on this very special afternoon.
